“In our community where a woman‘s primary task is to get married, produce children & nurture the family, a single woman with no family and other support is a uncomfortable presence.” Smt. Kamla Bai one such lady, resident of Putholi village Chittorgarh district, keeps doing battle in her life after the death of her husband and 18 years old son.
Fifty three years old Kamla Bai said as a single woman it’s easy for me to feel all alone even in a crowded room. But the adverse circumstances of her life give her courage to be an independent. Her husband died because of prolonged illness and old age. Kamla Bai gave one of her room on rent to earn her bread and butter.
In the midst of her ordeal she came to know about Self Help Groups under Sakhi a program for the social & economic upliftment of women like Kamla. She then associated and became a member of “Radha Rani Swayam Sahayata Samuh, Putholi”.
She started to organize meetings on weekly basis with saving of Rs. 20 and till now her group’s total saving is Rs 3600.Her regularity in SHG meetings help her in understanding the concept of savings and credit very well and even help her to take care of her herd properly.
During the capacity building phase of SHG she has learned about various livelihood opportunities & income generation activities and encouraged to increase income through goat farming as she is having 5 goats of local variety
She took a loan of Rs 1000/- from her SHG and bought a kid goat of sirohi breed at 1700 rupees. She is planning to increase her goat farming business. “samuh me judkar muje acha laga aur sahuh ne muje jivan me aage badhne ki rah dikhai hai; Main In bakri ke bacho ko pal poskar bada karungi aur bakri palan ko apna vyavsay banakar aapni aay ko badhana chahti hu”
“I feel very happy to be known as a beneficiary whose life now has a meaning. I equally feel very dignified as I am not dependant on anybody and today I can say that I am single but not solitary”.
