“No one sleeps hungry” – distributing food grains to during COVID

Social distancing is necessary to help limit the spread of the Corona virus, but for the economically weaker sections, food insecurity is a much more serious issue. Several families are dependent on daily wages for food. In the absence of livelihoods and work opportunities, these families are struggling to meet their basic food needs.

In response to this challenge, Sakhi Self-Help Groups across our project locations came together to launch an initiative called “Food Bank” to ensure that no one sleeps hungry in their respective villages.

Ensuring that no one goes hungry

A total of 3724 SHG members across locations collected 200.67 quintals of food grains in their SHGs with active participation of 85 Village Organisations.

All Sakhi SHG members decided to collect food grains like maize, wheat, pulses, etc. at the VO level without violating the norms of social distancing. The main objective behind these food banks was to provide dry grains at no cost to all poor and marginalised people who could not afford it.
